Penang Chinese Opera ( Hokkien & Teochew )

In order to appease the spirits (and entertain the living), Penang Chinese Opera are held all over George Town on makeshift stages during the Hungry Ghost Season.

Hungry Ghost Festival celebrations which starts on the first day of the seventh lunar month started this year on 3 August 2016. The 15-day celebrations in Bukit Mertajam would begin only on the third day of the seventh lunar month and ends on Aug 19 (Friday) as we light up the giant effigy in a bonfire to send off the deity.

Penang Chinese Opera Show

Penang Chinese opera and puppet shows as well as “kotai” in hokkien (stage singing performances) are staged in various parts of Penang during the month-long festival. The shows are staged to keep the spirits and Tai Su Yeah entertained.
