New Culture in Meng Eng Soo Open Day

Meng Eng Soo Open Day was an interesting event that happened in Penang recently. It happened in the past (7 July 2017) as organizers re-created the past. Those who went for the event had an enjoyable time because everyone was dressed in traditional outfits, performed interesting dramas, and played traditional instruments through the night. The organizers spent about 4 months preparing to bring back a culture and heritage over 40 years ago. Meng Eng Soo Open Day was a unique one-night event that brought so much precious memories in Penang.

The Footpath of our Sage Trailblazers

This was the Open Day Theme which allowed visitors to experience culture in the 19th century. This was a creative way in educating the younger generation about the rich heritage and culture in those days. Through wearing traditional costumes, playing traditional games, and performing drama, these activities highlighted the uniqueness of the Penangites’ livelihood then. One of the drama performances was about childhood games and songs so that adults could remember the good times and children could learn. Visitors who participated felt as if they were living in those times and understood their ancestors’ lifestyle better.

Meng Eng Soo’s Mission

Meng Eng Soo began as a memorial hall dedicated to the leaders and members of Ghee Hin Khongsi, but today it is under a management unit of Penang Chinese Council. The organizers want to expose visitors to revive past heritage so that they are not forgotten. Besides this event, they also organized the Penang Chinese New Year Celebration and other activities. These activities teach the public while having fun; making traditional handicraft, food, or simple goldsmithing are just some examples. As a result, it encourages visitors to embrace this unique heritage and ensure it lives on. As they continue to preserve the culture’s beauty, they hope more people will join them in this exploration.
