The month long annual Hungry Ghost Festival this year falls on 27 July until 24 August 2014. The Chinese believe the Gates of Hell are opened for spirits and ghosts to return to earth and roam freely in search of food and to visit their living ancestors every year. Various prayers, religious actives, opera performances and puppet theaters will be conducted through out the month at various venues especially in Penang.
Some of the famous shows are the Teochew and Hokkien Puppet Show. Teochew puppet shows are rare and considered a dying art in many parts of the world, including Malaysia. However, visitors can get a chance to watch the performances at Penang Lebuh Victoria, Penang Lebuh Carnavron, Penang Lee Jetty, Penang Anson Road Market, Penang Cecil Street Market and many more.
